The Course

Build One Joint Team and One Shared Incident Playbook

A 16-hour course for up to 30 trainer candidates: ideally 10 law enforcement, 10 fire/EMS, and 10 school staff. The lecture now lives in SSAVEIM Foundations, our free self-paced course, so day one is the class itself, scenarios included, with your trainers working it as students. Day two is where they teach that class and run those scenarios themselves, and they leave ready to repeat the training locally.

The Experience

What Happens in the Room

This course provides you with the experience and confidence to respond to a violent event, regardless of your daily responsibilities. Participants are trained to secure the students, identify the threat, provide medical intervention, and reunify students with their loved ones.

Lockdown, Response, Reunification, In That Order

The course walks the whole room through a violent attack from start to finish. Lockdown, then the public safety response, then reunification. Every block includes an exercise.

Violent Event Reunification Is Its Own Problem

After a violent attack, the school is a crime scene, so reunification has to happen somewhere else. Moving students to an offsite location, securing it, and getting families to the right place. This course does it hands on, with responders in the room.

School Staff and Responders Train Side by Side

School personnel work alongside law enforcement, fire/EMS, dispatch, PIO, and emergency management, rotating through roles so your team meets and trains together before a crisis, not during one.

No-Fault, No-Embarrassment Coaching

Instructors utilize a no-fault, no-embarrassment coaching style, providing hands-on experience for entry level and executives alike.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between SSAVEIM and SSAVEIM Train-the-Trainer?
SSAVEIM Train-the-Trainer is the 2-day / 16-hour format that prepares up to 30 trainer candidates to deliver SSAVEIM. Day one is the class itself, scenarios included, and day two is teaching that class and its scenarios within their own group, so candidates can demonstrate the material and become certified to deliver the 1-day / 8-hour SSAVEIM course locally.
Who should we select as SSAVEIM trainer candidates?
Select up to 30 candidates, ideally 10 law enforcement, 10 fire/EMS, and 10 school staff, who already have a role in training, school safety, or emergency planning. They should be comfortable leading groups and working with mixed audiences.
Do trainer candidates need to take SSAVEIM Foundations first?
Yes. SSAVEIM Foundations is a free, self-paced online course that covers the lecture material. Candidates complete it beforehand. That way everyone starts on the same page, and day one begins with the class rather than the lecture. Registration tracks who has finished and sends reminders to anyone who has not.
How does SSAVEIM relate to the “I Love U Guys” Foundation?
We partner with The “I Love U Guys” Foundation to combine their research-based best practices, created by school administrators, psychologists, public space safety experts and families, with our decades of first-hand experience as first responders. Together, we’ve created a life-saving curriculum to provide a hands-on training approach to School Safety and Violent Event Incident Management.
Will SSAVEIM work alongside our existing SRP/SRM or district safety plan?
Yes. SSAVEIM is built in partnership with The “I Love U Guys” Foundation and follows their Standard Response Protocol (SRP) and Standard Reunification Method (SRM) alongside NIMS and the ASIM Checklist™. The Foundation’s programs cover the full range of school responses and every kind of non-violent reunification. SSAVEIM covers the one part that sits outside them: the violent event. Lockdown, the public safety response, and violent-event reunification. It complements and strengthens your existing plans rather than replacing them.
Is this appropriate for all school staff?
Absolutely. The course is designed for all school staff, from administrators to support staff, alongside emergency responders. Instructors use a no-fault, no-embarrassment coaching style so every participant builds confidence regardless of their background or experience level.
How long do trainers stay certified? Are there ongoing fees?
Once certified, your trainers receive a 3-year SSAVEIM Train-the-Trainer certificate. During that period, they can deliver SSAVEIM locally as often as needed with no per-delivery fee from NCIER. They keep the full curriculum, checklists, and LMS access to run the course on your schedule.
What do trainers keep after the course?
Your trainers keep the curriculum, ASIM Checklists, LMS access, and their certificate so you can repeat training locally on your schedule.
How many people can attend a SSAVEIM Train-the-Trainer delivery?
A SSAVEIM Train-the-Trainer delivery accommodates up to 30 trainer candidates: ideally 10 law enforcement, 10 fire/EMS, and 10 school staff. Both days train this group of candidates; there is no separate participant group.
What does the host need to provide?
Hosts provide a suitable training space, basic AV, and participants from school(s) and local responder agencies. NCIER brings the SSAVEIM curriculum, Counterstrike Terrain™ for in-course exercises, instructor team, and supporting materials.

Didn't spend enough time talking through the elements/responsibilities of reunification accountability group, assembly group, services group. I just finished the course and I couldn't tell you what each of those groups is responsible for. Class participants shouldn't have been stuck doing the on-scene stuff at the tabletop and then they cannot observe/participate in the actual reunification side of things.

Should have gone into more detail of the process of running a reunification center and what everyone's responsibilities are.

Curious how to get this training back to my agency and school district so we can all get on the same page and train on it?.
