Stephen Shaw started his law enforcement career as an officer with the Chapel Hill Police Department and held many positions that were vital in keeping the community safe. He was a K-9 handler assigned to the patrol division for 7 years. He and Jax, the police dog, assisted in narcotics detection, tracking, and evidence recovery. For 2 years, he was a patrol supervisor overseeing and assisting all patrol personnel in handling serious incidents. He was also the Training Division Sergeant responsible for training new employees, on-going training, and the Career Progression Program. In 2021 Stephen moved to the Orange County Sheriff's Office and moved through the ranks from Corporal to Captain and currently serves as Deputy Commander of the Special Response Team.
Stephen volunteered with the Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) as a team leader. This unit responds to many different types of situations to ensure the safety of the community. He is a 2-time recipient of SERT Operator of the Year (2017, 2018).

Deputy Commander Special Response Team
Stephen joined the OCSO in 2021 as a Corporal and was promoted to Captain in 2024 where he managed the agency's day-to-day Patrol Services. He is also the law-enforcement liaison for the Orange County Partnership to Advance Diversions (OC-PAD) and Lantern programs, a community support and diversion initiative which connects people with behavioral-health or other support services as alternatives to certain justice-system involvement.

Before his promotion to Sergeant, Stephen started at Chapel Hill PD as a Police Officer, responsible for responding to calls for service, enforcing traffic and criminal laws, and conducting high visibility patrols. He performed investigations, conducted interviews, processed crime scenes and collected evidence. He spent 7 years as a K-9 handler assigned to the patrol division responsible for narcotics detection, tracking, evidence recovery and apprehension.
