Russell "Russ" Woody retired as Sergeant from Chapel Hill Police Department after 28 years of service. During his time with the department, Sgt. Woody served 9+ years as Department Training Coordinator, Assistant School Director - Basic Law Enforcement Training, and a member of E Platoon which patrolled the town's Central Business District. He also retires as a team leader with 25+ years on Special Emergency Response Team. In addition to his full-time duties, he served as a Physical Fitness Instructor, a Firearms Instructor, an Officer Survival Instructor, and a SWAT Instructor. Sgt. Woody was promoted to the rank of Sergeant on February 2015 and assigned to the Patrol Division as a Sergeant in A Platoon. He is currently an instructor with over 30 years of experience as a law enforcement and military trainer with a strong commitment to improving the technical and tactical capabilities of personnel.

Russ retired in 2020 as a Sergeant, overseeing daily operations of patrol including minor and major incidents. He was responsible for officers' daily activities along with completing disciplinary investigations, ensuring they meet training requirements, and providing evaluations and career direction. During his tenure, he also was SERT Team Leader/Trainer. Russ lead the team during a broad spectrum of operational missions. He was responsible for preparing, conducting, and revising all aspects of team tactics and training for the Department's Special Emergency Response Team. Russ was also an instructor for the Department's Active Shooter Training developed after the Columbine shooting. He was involved in training with the Patrol Carbine as Program Coordinator and Career Progression Coordinator in the Training Division. Russ was responsible for the development, evaluation, and delivery of the department's carbine operator program and classes as well as ongoing in-service training and qualifications. He planned and managed officer career development training and department training budget. He was a Qualified Assistant School Director for BLET. He shared responsibility for the operations of the Department's Basic Law Enforcement Training Academy.
