The simulations were definitely the most helpful. I was a PIO, and the instructors did a great job of simulating a press conference and posing difficult questions. It gave me a good idea of how to handle the media for an actual shooter event.

Which part(s) of the course was LEAST valuable to you? Please explain why.

Some of the PowerPoint sections were pretty hard to get through, mainly those that didn't have many stories, activities, or videos. This was especially difficult if these more information-dense sections were right after lunch.

Please provide any other comments or suggestions you have for improving this course.

I'd love to have a little more information on how to be a better PIO, maybe having a simulation where the PIO has to do a follow up media briefing with the incident commander or where they have to use social media.

What other training is most important to you now that you have completed this course?

I'd love to take some of the training related to communications, even some of the negotiator trainings.

AS A CIVILIAN SECURITY DIRECTOR, IT WAS MOST VALUABLE TO HAVE AN IN DEPTH UNDERSTANDING OF THE LE/FIRE/EMS RESPONSE TO AN ACTIVE SHOOTER/MASS EVENT AT A SITE SIMILAR TO MY AREA OF RESPONSIBILITY (COLUMBUS ZOO).

BECAUSE I AM A CIVILIAN, I WAS NOT ASSIGNED A UNIT NUMBER AND WAS NOT ABLE TO BE UTILIZED IN THE SYSTEM AS A RESOURCE. TO THAT END, I PARTICIPATED IN AREAS WHERE A SCRIBE WAS NEEDED AND ASSISTED RESPONDING LE OR EMS TEAMS WITH RADIO COMMUNICATIONS. THESE ELEMENTS MADE ME USEFUL AND GAVE ME THE ABILITY TO OBSERVE THE SCENARIOS FROM A WIDE SCOPE.
